Kayak rental

Choose from four bases around Lake Vättern

Rent a kayak for one day or more!

If you want to paddle on your own in the Northern Vättern archipelago, in the small archipelago outside Granvik, or perhaps spend a day with a beach stop from Borghamn, you can send an inquiry to rent a kayak here. This means that you are not making an immediate booking. Once we have received your inquiry, we will book you in as space allows and then send you an invoice that you can pay online with a card. If there are no kayaks available on the day you wish to book, we will call or email you to discuss alternative dates or locations. Unfortunately, it is not possible to rent a kayak per hour - it is only available for full-day rental.

Read more about the different kayak bases below and email if you have any questions – info@woodsandwater.se or call +46 (0)730289290.

Things to consider: It is not uncommon for new kayakers to overestimate their ability. Consider whether you can handle paddling under the prevailing conditions and be clear about how to act if you or someone in your party encounters problems during the trip. Be particularly vigilant about weather conditions that can change quickly on Lake Vättern. It is the responsibility of the kayak renter to ensure that the equipment is intact, but it is the responsibility of the renter to handle it correctly and make assessments of their ability in relation to the conditions

When?

The kayak rental opens in May/June and closes in August/September. It varies between the kayak bases and the weather during the season. The possibility to book a rental kayak starts in May.

About the four different kayak bases:

- Omberg/ Hästholmen
Located just south of Omberg in the charming, small fishing village of Hästholmen. From here, you can paddle up towards Omberg. The mountain plunges steeply into Lake Vättern, and there aren't many places to land along the shoreline.
At Omberg, it is practically ONLY possible to land at Älvarums Udde, which is a small rocky beach about 1.5-2 hours paddle north from Hästholmen. Älvarums Udde is a popular overnight spot for hikers as there is also a shelter here. Paddling around the entire Omberg from south to north takes about 3-4 hours for a less experienced paddler. Keep in mind that the wind often comes from the southwest and there are no islands to seek shelter behind.

As a paddler, you are exposed to the weather and it is difficult to land if you want to take a break from paddling for a while. Would you rather join one of our guided kayak tours? See the full range of kayak experiences with a guide here!

Omberg/ Borghamn
At the northern foot of Omberg lies another charming harbor. Here at Borghamn Strand (café, hotel, camping), there is also a kayak rental. Here in the north, there are more beaches to choose from, both north and south of the harbor area. It's also about a 1.5-2 hour paddle down to Älvarums Udde from here.
Keep in mind that the wind often comes from the southwest and that there are no islands to seek shelter behind here, so as a paddler, you are exposed to the weather. Paddling around the entire Omberg from north to south takes about 3-4 hours for a less experienced paddler.

- Northern Vättern Archipelago / Olshammar
A freshwater archipelago with over 50 islands. Rent a kayak for a day or two - but keep in mind when camping here that it is only allowed on five of them, of which Grönön is one and Krokholmen another. More information can be found on Sveaskog's website.

- Granvik
Great paddling on the western side of Vättern. Paddle past Djäknesundet and among the small islands you'll find near the shore just north of Granvik. Suitable for families with children as there is seldom strong winds here, and because you quickly reach the archipelago from Granviks Herrgård base

Public Access - The freedom to roam

The freedom to roam comes with responsibilities!
The general principle is not to disturb, not to destroy - here is a video about your resposibilities!

It is allowed to go ashore on cliffs and beaches - but not if they are too close to a residence. Also, be mindful not to approach nesting birds too closely - they will let you know if they feel you are getting too close, so refrain from getting closer and continue paddling.

During May-August, it's warm and light anyway, and our recommendation is that you don't need to make a fire, which otherwise risks spreading at this time of year - the embers can smolder underground for days without notice.

Also, remember to take back everything you brought - including toilet paper. Bring an extra garbage bag for this purpose.
