A whole day dedicated to the historical and medieval sights in and around Vadstena, though we’ll make a detour to the Viking Age to visit the runestone Rökstenen. The world’s longest ruin inscription of its kind. Nearby we’ll visit the ruin of the Alvastra Monastery at the foot of Omberg before heading into Vadstena. Right by the lake, Saint Birgitta founded the convent and Vadstena Abbey, a territory in which a certain calming ambience strikes many visitors. Enjoy all the colourful houses and rose draped alleys as we stroll the narrow streets of Vadstena on a guided tour.

We run this tour every Friday from April to May.

Alvastra Monastery

We visit the atmospheric overgrown ruins of Alvastra Monastery, beautifully situated at the foot of Omberg. This 12th century monastery was plundered in the 16th century Reformation and fell into ruin. Arcs, stairs and walls made out of local limestone partially overgrown by grass. This is a photographer’s dream destination!

We admire the work of the Vikings; Rökstenen runestone dating back to the 9th century has the longest known runic inscription in stone

Lunch on your own in the quaint medieval town of Vadstena. We’re happy to give your our suggestions on where to eat. You’ll have some time on your own to discover the shops and typically Swedish coloured houses that line up along the accessible high street in town.

We meet again for a guided tour in the town centre of Vadstena. We visit the old convent and walk the narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. At the shores of Lake Vättern we stop to check out the majestic moat-surrounded 16th century castle.
